Being a member of the Llanelli Labour party is not an easy thing this morning. I'm sure we are all licking out wounds. If your a deposed Labour councillor you must be pretty angry too. The fact of the matter is than Labour was part of a very unpopular regime in County Hall and there was very little we could do about that. It's fair to say that Llanelli has suffered greatly from council mismanagement and has to face up the frustrations and anger of former supporters. Plaid Cymru produced a strong campaign and offered policies that appealed to voters. Labour was just a little tired and tied by the coalition they struck with Independents four years ago.
There may be some solace. Plaid Cymru will be looking for a coalition and the Labour party may be a better match than Independents. On the other hand, why should Plaid prop up a party that has failed the electoral test. Labour have never really felt threatened in Llanelli until recently and the local party needs to adapt and strengthen their communications and campaigns within the local party. Labour may have come close to being wiped out, but this is a reality check and not another nail into her coffin. Many senior members of the party were removed from office and I'm sure this will allow a new generation of Labour activist to lead the party into a new direction. Labour does and will continue to play an important role in Llanelli, but so will Plaid Cymru.
